We've known this day was coming for months, but somehow it still
arrived faster than we expected.
As we walked into church that morning, it felt familiar in every
way, yet we knew it would be different. We saw friends we've known for years,
neighbors, and family members who had come to support us before we leave for
our mission. There were hugs, handshakes, and many of the same questions we've
been answering for the past few months.
"How much longer before you leave?"
"When do you fly?"
"Where are you going again?"
It reminded us how many people have been following this journey
with us.
One of the unique things about serving a senior mission is that
you're leaving a community you've spent years building. We aren't just saying
goodbye to a congregation. We're stepping away from people we've worshipped
with, served alongside, and come to care about over many years.
During the sacrament meeting, we were each invited to speak for
15 minutes, and we weren't quite sure how we would fill that much time. As we
prepared, though, the time came together naturally. We wanted our remarks to
focus on the Savior, the experiences that have strengthened our faith, and why
humanitarian service has become such an important part of our lives.
Standing at the pulpit, I found myself looking across the
congregation a little differently than I normally would. I realized how many
familiar faces have become part of our everyday life. It made me appreciate the
friendships we've built and the ward family that has supported us through so
many seasons of life with us.
After the meeting, we were greeted by friends and family,
spending time visiting with people, answering questions, giving hugs, and
promising to stay in touch while we're away.
Our departure is getting close now. There are still lists to
finish, appointments to keep, and a few more details to take care of before
July 13. But this Sunday felt like an important milestone.
It reminded us that all the preparation we’ve been doing is
about to become a reality.
For the first time, it felt like all of our preparations had
reached an important milestone.
There are still two weeks before we leave, but this Sunday
quietly marked the beginning of our goodbye.
